we live in a townhouse that faces South and that is attached to another townhouse on the East. on the West side of the house there are only TWO windows (excluding ones the cats have no access to). VERY LITTLE direct sunlight comes into our house.

thank you everyone for your advice, thoughts and well wishes! Iggy took the prescribed medicine for 5 days, as recommended, and now seems to be back to himself with no more blood in his urine. amazing. i still can't believe that this may have been stress-related, especially since the vet connected it with dry food which they never eat (although their treats are dry).... but either way, i'm just glad that Iggy seems to be ok. :) hopefully this wont happen again...!

The Beautiful Devon Belleh

La Belaj Ventroj de Devonoj

Devons have somewhat unique bellehs and some people think that they're "strange" or "ugly". i am here to tell you why i think Devon bellehs are BEAUTIFUL and AWESOME!

Devonoj havas iomete unikajn ventojn kaj iuj homoj opinias ke ili estas "strangaj" aŭ "malbelaj". nu, nun mi klarigos al vi, kial mi opinias, ke la ventroj de Devonoj estas BELAJ kaj BONEGAJ!

Devons have a lot of extra skin, especially on their bellehs. when they sit the bottom of their bellehs look kind of.... pouch-like? i find this super cute! :3

Devonoj havas multe da ekstra haŭto, precipe sur siaj ventoj. kiam ili sidas, la subaĵo de siaj ventoj aspektas iome kiel... kropo? mi opinias, ke tio estas beleta! :))

there's also extra skin around their chest. all of this extra skin serves a purpose and is not always "extra"!

....it all disappears! all of that "extra" skin makes for SUPER stretchiness and SUPER agility! of course, all cats are Masters of streching and agility, but i think Devons are particularly well suited for it. i've said it before and i'll say it again, Devons are the Greyhounds of the Catworld!

thoughts on kibble / pensoj pri manĝaĵo

disclaimer: the following is a long spiel regarding my own opinion on things. please don't be offended by it if you don't agree and please do feel free to share your own opinion, even if contradictory to mine.

averto: la sekva teksto estas longa parolo pri mia propra opinio. bonvolu ne ofendiĝi se vi ne konsentas al ĝi. fakte, bonvolu diri al mi vian opinion eĉ se ĝi estas mala je la mia.

i've been thinking. why do people feed their pets kibble?

kibble is basically astronaut food. seriously, think about it. what is astronaut food? scientifically formulated "food" that is designed to have "everything" you need and pretty much nothing else. it's extremely processed, dry and is made to taste like stuff that hardly resembles what it orignally may have been. what is kibble? the same thing.

to me, feeding your pets kibble is like feeding your children (or yourself) astronaut food. all the time. seriously. would YOU want to live off little pellets that have "everything" you need? would you feed your children that? so why do people feed their beloved four-legged friends that???

because it's "easier" on the wallet? more convenient? because your vet recommended it? in case you didn't know, vets get paid to recommend it and vets are NOT dietitians or nutritionists any more than general practitioners are.

think about it. please.

i'm seriously thinking about making a page on this blog dedicated to raw food for cats and i think i will use the above as the openning to it. i am no expert when it comes to diets or nutrition for cats, of course. the page would just be a place for me to voice my opinions, show how/what i feed my cats and provide links to further information on the topic. it might take me a while to compile everything i'd need for such a page, but i think i'll try.

"manĝaĵo" scienco-bazita por enhavi "ĉion", kiun oni bezonas kaj apenaŭ ion ajn alian. ĝi estas multege procedita,sekigita kaj estas dizajnita por gusti simila al la manĝaĵo de kiu ĝi eble devenis sed al kiu ĝi tute ne plu vere rilatas. kio estas seka manĝaĵo por bestoj? la sama aĵo.

miaopinie, donadi al la dormbestoj sekan manĝaĵon estas kvazaŭ donadi al la geinfanoj (aŭ al vi mem) manĝaĵon por kosmonaŭtoj. notu la -ad-n. serioze. ĉu VI volus manĝi ĉiutage malgrandajn sekajn bulojn, kiuj enhavas "ĉion", kiun vi bezonas? ĉu vi donus al la infanoj tion? kial do homoj donadas tion al siaj amataj kvar-piedaj amikoj???

ĉu ĉar tio estas "pli facila"? aŭ pli oportuna? ĉu ĉar la bestkuracisto rekomendis ĝin? parenteze, se i ne jam scias, bestkuracistoj gajnas monon por rekomendi ĝin kaj ili NE estas spertuloj pri nutraĵo same kiel ĝeneralaj doktoroj ne estas.

pensu pri tio, mi petas.

mi serioze pensadas pri fari paĝeton en ĉi tiu blogo pri kurda manĝaĵo por katoj kaj mi pensas, ke mi uzos la supran tekston kiel la komencaĵo. kompreneble, mi ne estas spertulo pri nutraĵo por katoj. la paĝeto simple estus ejo, kie mi povus disdoni miajn opiniojn, montri kiel/kion mi donas al miaj katoj kaj disponigi ligliojn al pluaj informoj pri la afero. eble mi bezonos multe da tempo por kompili ĉion, kio estas necesa por tia paĝeto, sed mi pensas, ke mi provos tion fari.

long time no see! sorry for my sudden disappearing act. :( i feel that i should explain for those who are interested.

sal delonge! pardonon pro mia tuj malaperado. :( mi sentas kvazaŭ mi klarigu la kialon por tiuj, kiuj interesiĝas pri ĝi.

Fae and Iggy are doing fine and i swear they're cuter every day. :) i, on the other hand, have had a crazy/lazy past couple of weeks because i became obsessed with a "new" hobby: film photography (and vintage cameras). i've been so obsessed with acquiring and using film cameras that i have neglected to use Panda (my digital camera; all my cameras have names btw) and in turn have been taking very few photos of Fae & Iggy lately. :(

Fae kaj Iggy bonfartas kaj mi opinias, ke ĉiutage ili fariĝas pli amindaj. :) aliaflanke, dum la pasitaj semajnoj mi freneziĝis/pigriĝis ĉar mi fariĝis tute obsedita pri "nova" ŝatokupo: filma fotografio (kaj antikaj fotiloj). mi obsedis tiel multe pri akiri kaj uzi filmajn fotilojn, ke mi tute ne emis uzi  Panda-n (mian ciferan fotilon; ĉiuj el miaj fotiloj nomon havas, perenteze) kaj do mi tre malofte fotis Fae k Iggy lastatempe. :(

over the past couple of weeks i've acquired 4 "new" cameras from the 1950's ~ early 1970's. all but one of them are completely manual (no "auto" anything), so i've been studying studying & practicing how to use them and how to expose photos properly. i have yet to take any photos of Fae & Iggy with them because manual indoor photography is harder than outdoor and fast moving subjects in low/indirect light are harder yet!

dum la pasintaj kelkaj semajnoj mi akiris 4 "novajn" fotilojn faritaj inter la 1950 jardekoj kaj la 1970 jardekoj. ĉiuj el ili krom unu funkcias tute mane (tute ne aŭtomataj). tial mi studadas kaj min ekzercas pri uzi ilin kaj bone ekspozi fotojn. uzante tiujn fotilojn, mi ankoraŭ ne fotis Fae-n kaj Iggy-n ĉar mane foti en ĉambro estas pli malfacila ol foti ekstere kaj foti ion movantan en malmulte da lumo / nerekta lumo estas eĉ pli malfacila!

anyway, that's my excuse. i will try to use Panda more often for the sake of having immediate photos to post to this blog. in the meantime, i will try to perfect using manual cameras so that i can post film photos of Fae & Iggy! i wonder if you all will be able to tell the difference between film and digital. ;)

Iggy, my part-time hero / Iggy, mia part-tempa heroo

over the last 3 or so days, various bugs have somehow been getting into the apartment..... and i HATE bugs. HATE them. i always depends on the other human to kill them/escort them out while i stand on the other side of the room in horror, but sometimes the other human isn't around/can't be bothered to do anything about the bug... in comes my new hero, Iggy! the past few days Iggy has killed and (to my utter disgust) ate them all! :D

dum la pasintaj 3 tagoj, diversaj insektoj iele eniris la apartamenton........ kaj mi MALAMAS insektojn. MALAMEGAS ilin. ĉiam mi dependas de la alia homo pri mortigi/eksterenporti la insektojn dum mi timege staradas sur la alia flanko de la ĉambro, sed foje la alia homo ne hejme estas aŭ li ne volas fari ion pri la insektoj........ sed tiam alvenas mia nova heroo, Iggy! dum la pasintaj kelkaj tagoj, Iggy mortigis kaj (tute terure) manĝis ĉiujn insektojn! :D

yesterday, however, i caught Iggy much more cautiously playing with a bug and he simply played with it, never trying to kill or eat it. here's a little videoclip of it.

tamen hieraŭ mi trovis, ke Iggy simple kaj tre zorgeme ludadis kun insekto. li neniam provis mortigi aŭ manĝi ĝin. jen filmeto pri ĝi.

in case you were wondering, Iggy's other part-time job is being a clown. Iggy can be amazingly silly/crazy at times. :P
