itchy moving / juka transloĝiĝado

it's been a while since i've updated this blog properly, sorry AGAIN! things were really up and down for a while, but things seem to be improving now. i want to start 2012 off on the right foot!

jam pasis iom da tempo ĝis kiam mi ĝuste ĝisdatigis ĉi tiun blogon, pardonon DENOVE! la pasintajn kelkajn semajnojn mi estis iom malfeliĉa pro diversaj aferoj, sed nun tiuj aferoj verŝajne pliboniĝas iom post iom. mi volas komenci la novan jaron bone!

for the past couple of weeks (month?) Iggy has gotten bumps all over his head & neck and in other places around his body. he's been scratching and licking himself a lot.... at first i thought the bumps were just from his playfights with Fae, but it soon became apparent that they're a reaction to something. you may remember that Iggy was surrendered by his previous owner due to a supposed allergy to another cat... well i'm certain that this is that same "allergy", but it's obviously not to another cat and i can't think of any foodstuff that could have triggered it.... we now think it might be an environmental allergy or seasonal skin condition. on Tuesday we gave both Iggy & Fae a bath in special shampoo that's suppose to sooth itchy/irritated skin and it seems to have helped a lot, although only temporarily. perhaps we will have to give Iggy a bath on a weekly basis in the summer?

dum la pasintaj kelkaj semanoj (aŭ monato?) Iggy havas multe da etaj ŝvelaĵoj ĉie sur la kapo, kolo kaj sur aliaj lokoj sur la korpo. li ofte sin gratas kaj lekas..... unue mi pensis, ke la ŝveltaĵoj estis pro lud-batelado kun Fae, sed baldaŭ estis klare, ke la ŝveltaĵoj estis okazigiaj de ia alergio. eble vi memoras, ke la antaŭa posedanto de Iggy fordonis Iggy-n pro "algerio kontraŭ alia kato"..... nu, mi certas, ke la nuna alergio estas la sama "alergio", sed kompreneble la alergio ne estas kontraŭ alia kato. tamen, mi ankaŭ kredas, ke la alergio ne estas kontraŭ iu manĝaĵo.... mi nun pensas, ke eble la alergio rilatas al la medio (vetero, sezono, floroj, ktp). marde ni banis kaj Iggy kaj Fae per speciala ŝampuo, kiu helpas trankviligi jukan haŭton kaj ŝajnas, ke la ŝampuo multe helpis Iggy-n, almenaŭ dum iom da tempo. eble ni devos bani Iggy-n ĉiusemajne en somero?

meanwhile, the real estate drama that i've mentioned in previous posts has (hopefully) come to a conclusion! in 3 weeks we will be moving! while i've had cats in the past, i have no experience moving house with cats... does anyone have any tips on minimizing the stress this will cause on Fae & Iggy? the place that we will be moving into will be much bigger than our current place... i'm thinking that Fae & Iggy should be confined to a room for a little while before being allowed free run of the place....? hmm..... any ideas/tips/advice is very much welcome!

dumtempe, la dramo pri la loĝejo, pri kiu mi menciis en antaŭaj blogaĵoj, (espereble) nun finiĝas! post 3 semajnoj ni transloĝiĝos! antaŭe mi havis katojn, sed neniam antaŭe mi transloĝiĝis kune kun katoj.... ĉu iu havas iun ajn sugestojn/konsilojn pri kiel ne streĉigi la katojn dum transloĝiĝado? la nova loĝejo estas multe pli granda ol la nuna loĝejo.... mi pensas, ke Fae k Iggy estu fermitaj en unu ĉambro dum iom da tempo antaŭ ol ili povas esplori la tutan loĝejon...? hmm.... ĉiuj ideoj/sugestoj/konsiloj estas bonvenaj kaj aprezitaj!

anyway, possible lack of internet access in the coming weeks aside, i hope to post a lot more regularly in 2012! going to try my best...!

thoughts on kibble / pensoj pri manĝaĵo

disclaimer: the following is a long spiel regarding my own opinion on things. please don't be offended by it if you don't agree and please do feel free to share your own opinion, even if contradictory to mine.

averto: la sekva teksto estas longa parolo pri mia propra opinio. bonvolu ne ofendiĝi se vi ne konsentas al ĝi. fakte, bonvolu diri al mi vian opinion eĉ se ĝi estas mala je la mia.

i've been thinking. why do people feed their pets kibble?

kibble is basically astronaut food. seriously, think about it. what is astronaut food? scientifically formulated "food" that is designed to have "everything" you need and pretty much nothing else. it's extremely processed, dry and is made to taste like stuff that hardly resembles what it orignally may have been. what is kibble? the same thing.

to me, feeding your pets kibble is like feeding your children (or yourself) astronaut food. all the time. seriously. would YOU want to live off little pellets that have "everything" you need? would you feed your children that? so why do people feed their beloved four-legged friends that???

because it's "easier" on the wallet? more convenient? because your vet recommended it? in case you didn't know, vets get paid to recommend it and vets are NOT dietitians or nutritionists any more than general practitioners are.

think about it. please.

i'm seriously thinking about making a page on this blog dedicated to raw food for cats and i think i will use the above as the openning to it. i am no expert when it comes to diets or nutrition for cats, of course. the page would just be a place for me to voice my opinions, show how/what i feed my cats and provide links to further information on the topic. it might take me a while to compile everything i'd need for such a page, but i think i'll try.

seka manĝaĵo por bestoj estas kvazaŭ manĝaĵo por kosomonaŭtoj. serioze, pensu pri tio. kio estas manĝaĵo por kosmonaŭtoj? "manĝaĵo" scienco-bazita por enhavi "ĉion", kiun oni bezonas kaj apenaŭ ion ajn alian. ĝi estas multege procedita,sekigita kaj estas dizajnita por gusti simila al la manĝaĵo de kiu ĝi eble devenis sed al kiu ĝi tute ne plu vere rilatas. kio estas seka manĝaĵo por bestoj? la sama aĵo.

miaopinie, donadi al la dormbestoj sekan manĝaĵon estas kvazaŭ donadi al la geinfanoj (aŭ al vi mem) manĝaĵon por kosmonaŭtoj. notu la -ad-n. serioze. ĉu VI volus manĝi ĉiutage malgrandajn sekajn bulojn, kiuj enhavas "ĉion", kiun vi bezonas? ĉu vi donus al la infanoj tion? kial do homoj donadas tion al siaj amataj kvar-piedaj amikoj???

ĉu ĉar tio estas "pli facila"? aŭ pli oportuna? ĉu ĉar la bestkuracisto rekomendis ĝin? parenteze, se i ne jam scias, bestkuracistoj gajnas monon por rekomendi ĝin kaj ili NE estas spertuloj pri nutraĵo same kiel ĝeneralaj doktoroj ne estas.

pensu pri tio, mi petas.

mi serioze pensadas pri fari paĝeton en ĉi tiu blogo pri kurda manĝaĵo por katoj kaj mi pensas, ke mi uzos la supran tekston kiel la komencaĵo. kompreneble, mi ne estas spertulo pri nutraĵo por katoj. la paĝeto simple estus ejo, kie mi povus disdoni miajn opiniojn, montri kiel/kion mi donas al miaj katoj kaj disponigi ligliojn al pluaj informoj pri la afero. eble mi bezonos multe da tempo por kompili ĉion, kio estas necesa por tia paĝeto, sed mi pensas, ke mi provos tion fari.

Iggy is strange for several reasons, reason number 1 being he thinks the heater has a flavor! a VERY NICE flavor, apparently. i have videographic evidence to back my claim!

Iggy estas stranga plurkiale, sed la 1a kialo estas, ke li kredas, ke la varmigilo bongustas! bongustEGas, fakte. jen, mi havas filmeton kiel pruvo pri ĉi tio!

have you ever heard of a cat that licks a heater or other hot things? any idea why Iggy does such a weird thing?? SURELY there's a reason.....! he licks the heater EVERYday, SEVERAL TIMES a day and ONLY when it's on and hot. he even does it when it's so hot that you wouldn't even want to touch it with your hands let alone your tongue.

ĉu vi iam ajn aŭdis pri kato, kiu lekadas varmigilon aŭ alian varmaĵon? ĉu vi havas iun ajn ideon pri kial Iggy faradas ion tiel strangega?? CERTE devas esti ian kialon.....! ĈIUtage KELKfoje li lekadas la varmigilon kaj NUR kiam ĝi estas ŝaltita kaj varma. li eĉ lekadas ĝin kiam ĝi estas tiel varma, ke oni ne volus tuŝi ĝin mane kaj certe ne lange.

......maybe he's just a masochist. lmao

......eble simple plaĉas al li sin dolorigi mdr.

Iggy's first day / la unua tago de Iggy

before bringing Iggy into the apartment, the other human went up and closed Fae in our bedroom. we still had nothing at all for Iggy, so he ran off to the petstore while i brought Iggy upstairs and closed us both in the spare bedroom (Fae's favorite room btw). of course Fae heard his arrival as he was very loud about it. ^^;

like Fae, Iggy loves his food more than anything.

immediately upon being let out of the box Iggy explored every place low & high in the room. places that Fae had never tried to reach or had reached with difficulty Iggy reached with ease! he's obviously an experienced climber and explorer. when we finally had dishes to give him food and water he ate as if he had been lost in a desert for weeks! i guess he hadn't been fed/given water that day...? he's currently on Science Diet because that's what the RSPCA feeds its animals, but i intend to transition him to raw as soon as i get our vet's approval.

anyway, eventually Fae was let out of our bedroom and she immediately went to the spare room door which had never been closed before. at one point the door was barely open a crack when both of them were at it and they both had their first good whiff of each other.

Fae's response: HIIIISSSSS SPIT SPIT BAM BAM BAM!! *attacks the door*
Iggy's reply: HIIISSSS *runs away under the bed*

poor Iggy got a little scare from Fae, but he quickly bounced back not overly fazed. he is use to dealing with other cats and has confidence. Fae, on the other hand, was very miffed and confused. she hasn't attacked the door again like that since then, but she does hiss & spit a bit whenever she's at the door and knows Iggy's on the other side.

anyway, Iggy's first night went fine. i discovered that: Iggy LOVES string; he is SUPER affectionate and is gentler about it than Fae (ie. no biting); he is VERY demanding about his food, just like Fae; his voice is very similar to Fae's. i spent the night in the guest bed with him curled up in Fae's favorite spot next to me under the blanket... i see fights over this in the  future!

yesterday went about the same except without Fae attacking the door. Iggy is pretty laid back (excluding food related matters) and is taking things very well. Fae, on the other hand.... i could write a whole seperate post on how Fae is handling things and i think i will. stay tuned!

in the meantime, if anyone has any advice on introducing cats to each other it would be much appreciated. we intend to take things slow but could use some ideas on how to progress with it. thanks in advance!

itching / jukado

for the past two weeks or so Fae has been scratching more than usual and we can't figure out why. we don't see any fleas on her and haven't seen any for a while. we gave her another dose of Revolution (flea stuff) because it was time for one anyway, but it didn't seem to help. then i thought that maybe she could be suffering from dry skin related to her diet, so i started adding more salmon oil to her diet. i was still uneasy, though, so yesterday we tried giving her a bath. neither of us had ever washed a cat before.

la pasintan 2 semajnojn Fae gratas sin pli multe ol kutime kaj mi ne povas kompreni la kialon. ne videblas puloj sur ŝi kaj ni ne delonge vidis eĉ unu pulon. ni surmetis sur ŝin ankoraŭ unu dozon de Revolution (kontraŭ-pul-aĵo) ĉar ŝi bezonis ĝin malgraŭe, tamen ĝi verŝajne ne helpis ŝin. post tio mi pensis, ke eble ŝi suferas pro seka haŭto rilate de nutrado, do mi komencis aldoni pli da salmo-oelo al ŝia manĝaĵo. mi ankoraŭ maltrankvilis, do hieraŭ ni provis bani Fae-n. neniu el ni antaŭe banis katon.

oh how i wish i could have taken pictures of Fae during her bath! she handled it really really well, which makes me think that she must have gotten baths in the past. we used Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo which is suppose to help sooth and clean itchy/inflamed skin. now her fur and skin are even softer than normal and she smells wonderful. :))

ho, kiel multe mi deziris foti Fae dum la banado! ŝi kondutis tre tre bone kaj tio igas min pensi, ke ŝi certe estis banita antaŭe. ni uzis Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo, kiu (laŭ la botelo) purigas kaj plibonigas  sekan/inflamigitan haŭton. nun ŝia haŭto kaj pelto estas eĉ pli mola ol kutime kaj ŝi odoras bonege. :))

she's still be scratching herself a lot, though.... i wonder if we should apply another dose of Revolution since the other inadvertently got washed off? if her itchiness doesn't get better soon i might call the vet because she's been scratching so much/so hard that she's hurting herself. :/

tamen, ŝi ankoraŭ gratas sin..... mi scivolas, ĉu ni denove surmetu dozon de Revolution sur ŝin ĉar la antaŭa dozo estis senintence forlavita? se ŝia jukado ne pliboniĝos baldaŭ, mi eble telefonos la bestkuraciston ĉar ŝi gratas sin tiel multe kaj tiel forte, ke ŝi vundas sin. :/

relaxing Monday / trankviliĝa lundo

it was nice spending time out on the balcony with Fae today. for some reason she wanted to go outside a lot more than usual...... me and the other human have been toying around with the idea of getting Fae an outdoor enclosure or a stroller. if we got her an enclosure it would have to be small because our balcony isn't very wide and even a small one would be expensive. at the moment we're leaning more towards getting a stroller, but really we're still just toying around with the idea. has anyone else had good experiences with enclosures/strollers? :)

hodiaŭ estis tre agrable forpasi iom da tempo kun Fae sur la balkono. iale ŝi volis iri eksteren pli ofte kaj longe ol kutime....... mi kaj la alia homo pensetas pri aĉeti eksteran kat-ludejon aŭ katĉaron (simile ol beboĉaro). se ni aĉetus ludejon, ĝi devus esti mallarĝa ĉar la balkono estas mallarĝa kaj eĉ mallarĝa ludejo estus multkosta. nuntempe pli plaĉas al ni katĉaro ol ekstera ludejo, sed ni ankoraŭ nur pensETas pri aĉeti tiujn aĵojn. ĉu iuj el vi havas sperton kun eksteraj kat-ludejoj/katoĉaroj? :)

how much to feed her? / kiom da manĝaĵo doni?

it's finally starting to feel like xmas! we put up our xmas tree today. :) at first Fae kept trying to eat it, which was worrying.... but she seems to be over that now. i wonder if she's seen an xmas tree before. i would think so since she's 2 years old....

finfine mi sentas kvazaŭ kristnasko pliproksimiĝas! hodiaŭ ni kunigis nian kristnaskan arbon. :) unue Fae provadis ĝin manĝi.... ni zorgis pri tio.... sed nun ŝajnas, ke ŝi jam ne plu atentas la arbon. ni scivolas, ĉu iam antaŭe ŝi vidis kristnaskan arbon. mi pensas, ke jes ĉar ŝi jam estas 2jaraĝa...

changing the subject, something has caught my attention about Fae. she constantly acts like she's starving. we still don't know her exact weight, but we've been giving her 1/4 cup of Science Diet a day as it says to for a 5lb (2 - 3kg) cat. we're trying to be careful to not overfeed her, but she always wants more more more. i wonder if this is normal behavior for a Devon Rex....? should we be giving her more??

ŝangi la temon de mia skribado, mi remarkis ion pri Fae. ŝi ĉiam kondutas kvazaŭ ŝi estas mortmalsata. ni ankoraŭ ne scias ŝian ekzaktan pezon, sed ni donas al ŝi po 1/4 taso da Science Diet ĉiutage, same kiel la sako diras pri 5lb (2 - 3kg) pezaj katoj. ni estas tre zorgema por ke ni ne donu al ŝi tro multe da manĝaĵo, sed ĉiam ŝi volas manĝi plu plu plu. ni scivolas, ĉu tio estas norma por Devon-Reksoj....? ĉu ni donu al ŝi pli multe da manĝaĵo??

random side note: apparently she really likes cooked chicken breast. :P
