wow.... Blogger has completely changed! i can't seem to keep up with anything anymore...

Fae is doing well. :) but she has put on a bit of weight! she's kinda sorta on a "diet" now. as the days are getting colder, she and Iggy seek out all the warmth they can get.

Fae bone fartas. :) sed ŝi iome pli peziĝis! nun ŝi iomete "dietas". lastatempe la tagoj pli kaj pli malvarmiĝas kaj ŝi kaj Iggy klopodas malkovri ĉiun ajn varmejon.

Iggy is doing alright except his skin allergy has been acting up again. :( he is back on cortisone and we are hopefully about to try out a food trial to completely eliminate the possibility of a food allergy. :/ otherwise he is his normal, ever-high-strung and anxious self.

Iggy bone fartas krom tio, ke lia haŭt-alergio revenis. :( li denove manĝas la kuracilon "cortisone" kaj espereble baldaŭ ni provos malkovri ĉu lia alergio vere ne rilatas al manĝaĵo per speciala dieto. :/ krom tio li estas ege anksia kaj energiplena kiel kutime.

thank you everyone for your advice, thoughts and well wishes! Iggy took the prescribed medicine for 5 days, as recommended, and now seems to be back to himself with no more blood in his urine. amazing. i still can't believe that this may have been stress-related, especially since the vet connected it with dry food which they never eat (although their treats are dry).... but either way, i'm just glad that Iggy seems to be ok. :) hopefully this wont happen again...!

i've been thinking. why do people feed their pets kibble?

kibble is basically astronaut food. seriously, think about it. what is astronaut food? scientifically formulated "food" that is designed to have "everything" you need and pretty much nothing else. it's extremely processed, dry and is made to taste like stuff that hardly resembles what it orignally may have been. what is kibble? the same thing.

to me, feeding your pets kibble is like feeding your children (or yourself) astronaut food. all the time. seriously. would YOU want to live off little pellets that have "everything" you need? would you feed your children that? so why do people feed their beloved four-legged friends that???

because it's "easier" on the wallet? more convenient? because your vet recommended it? in case you didn't know, vets get paid to recommend it and vets are NOT dietitians or nutritionists any more than general practitioners are.

think about it. please.

i'm seriously thinking about making a page on this blog dedicated to raw food for cats and i think i will use the above as the openning to it. i am no expert when it comes to diets or nutrition for cats, of course. the page would just be a place for me to voice my opinions, show how/what i feed my cats and provide links to further information on the topic. it might take me a while to compile everything i'd need for such a page, but i think i'll try.

miaopinie, donadi al la dormbestoj sekan manĝaĵon estas kvazaŭ donadi al la geinfanoj (aŭ al vi mem) manĝaĵon por kosmonaŭtoj. notu la -ad-n. serioze. ĉu VI volus manĝi ĉiutage malgrandajn sekajn bulojn, kiuj enhavas "ĉion", kiun vi bezonas? ĉu vi donus al la infanoj tion? kial do homoj donadas tion al siaj amataj kvar-piedaj amikoj???

ĉu ĉar tio estas "pli facila"? aŭ pli oportuna? ĉu ĉar la bestkuracisto rekomendis ĝin? parenteze, se i ne jam scias, bestkuracistoj gajnas monon por rekomendi ĝin kaj ili NE estas spertuloj pri nutraĵo same kiel ĝeneralaj doktoroj ne estas.

upon returning to Brisbane on July 22nd we went (on very little sleep!) to go pick up the cats. to our relief, they were fine and very glad to see us. silly me was worried that they may have started to forget us or that they'd be really mad at us! but no, we were immediately greeted with loud purrs and lots of love. :) according to the people at the cattery, they settled in quickly and had been fine the whole time.

once we got back home it was almost as if they'd never left. while we humans tried to nap, Fae & Iggy ran around like lunatics. maybe it was the excitement of being home? once we gave up sleeping we gave them both baths as they were both absolutely filthy. Iggy handled his first bath (with us) very well. :)

kiam mi revenis hejme estis subite kvazaŭ ili neniam foriris. dum ni homoj provadis dormeti, Fae k Iggy kuradaĉis tra la tuta apartamento kvazaŭ frenezuloj. eble pro la ekscitiĝo de reveni hejme? kiam ni rezignis niajn dormetojn, ni banis ilin ĉar ili ambaŭ estis terurege malpuregaj. Iggy kondutis tre bone dum lia unua bano (kun ni). :)

wanting to go outside / deziras ekstereniri

i've noticed some changes in them since they've been back. for one, they have a new found love of being outside, especially Iggy. i feel bad that all we have is a balcony here since they obviously loved the outdoor enclosure/garden. :( also, their fights have become a lot rougher. don't get me wrong, they're still not out to hurt each other, but if looks could kill they'd have killed each other by now. also, Iggy has become a pro at bodyslamming poor Fae! BUT at the same time they are still very affectionate towards each other and Iggy has even started to reciprocate Fae's cleaning! :D

mi rimarkis kelkajn ŝanĝojn en ili ekde kiam ili revenis hejme. ekzemple, ili nun havas novan pli grandan amon pri esti ekstere, precipe Iggy. mi ege malĝojas, ke ĉe nia apartamento estas nur balkono ĉar evidente ili tute amis la fermigitan ĝardenon. :( plue, iliaj bataloj fariĝis multe pli malmildaj. bv ne miskompreni min, ili ankoraŭ ne deziras dolorigi unu la alian, sed se mienoj povus mortigi ion, ili jam delonge mortigus unu la alian. kaj verŝajne Iggy fariĝis spertulo pri venki kompatindan Fae-n! SED samtempe ili ankoraŭ estas tre amikema al unu la alia kaj nun Iggy eĉ reciproke purigas Fae-n! :D

last but not least, after the initial "OMG YAY I'M HOME!!", Fae acted rather strangely which made us worry about her. she lacked her usual enthusiasm about food-- something that's strikingly noticeable as she usually has so much of it-- and she was acting rather sluggish and lethargic. even though i transitioned them back to a raw diet slowly, when given food of any kind she often barely ate without lots of encouragement. much of her first week back she spent sleeping and wouldn't even play with her favorite balls. :/ it should also be noted that she gained weight while away and had a sore on her neck where she probably scratched herself raw from anxiety. it took a week+ for the Fae that we know and love to return to her normal energetic, food-loving self, but now she's back and hopefully here to stay!

kaj ankoraŭ unu ekzemplo: post la komenca "HMD MI ESTAS HEJME JEJ!!", Fae kondutis iom strange kaj ni ege zorgis pri ŝi. mankis al ŝi ŝia kutima "fajro" (entuziasmo) pri manĝaĵo-- kiu estis ege rimarkenda ĉar kutime ŝi havas tiel multe da ĝi-- kaj ŝi ŝajnis tute senenergia kaj letargia. malgraŭ tio, ke mi tre malrapide ŝanĝis ilian manĝaĵon ree al kruda manĝaĵo, ofte ŝi preskaŭ nenion manĝis krom se ni multe kuraĝigis ŝin. dum la plejparto de ŝia unua semajno hejme ŝi dormadis kaj eĉ ne volis ludi per ŝiaj plej ŝatataj pilkoj. :/ plue mi ankaŭ diru, ke ŝi plipeziĝis dum ŝia restado ĉe la kat-hotelo kaj sur ŝia kolo estis vundo, kie ŝi verŝajne tro ofte/multe sin gratadis pro anksio. bezonis pli ol unu semajno por ke Fae refariĝi energia kaj manĝegema kiel kutime, sed nun ŝi denove fartas bone kaj espereble ĉiam estos tiel!

on Monday July 11th we drove Fae and Iggy to the Cat's Meow in preparation for our trip to Singapore. the drive took around 45mins and on the way Iggy got really nervous. so nervous that he threw up his breakfast & even pooed a little in his carrier. :(( Fae was very nervous too, but Iggy a lot more so, understandably. we had only gotten him a month before and that required an agonizing (for Iggy) 2 hour drive....

lunde la 11a de julio ni veturigis aŭte Fae-n kaj Iggy-n al la Cat's Meow por prepari vojaĝi al Singapuro. ni veturis dum ĉ. 45 minutoj kaj laŭvoje Iggy fariĝis ege nervoza. tiel nervoza, ke li vomis sian matenmanĝaĵon kaj eĉ iome fekis en sia portilo. :(( ankaŭ Fae estis tre nervoza, sed kompreneble Iggy estis multoble pli pro ni adoptis lin nur 1 monato antaŭe kaj tiam li devis veturi aŭte dum 2 teruregaj (por Iggy) horoj....

once we got Iggy cleaned up and checked them in, things looked up... kind of. the suite was very nice with a heated room including a tunnel, bed, litter trays and a little box thing for them to hide in. the attached enclosed garden was an immediate fav.

upon letting Fae out of her carrier all of her nervousness seemed to turn to anger. she was hissing and spitting and growling all over the place, even at Iggy. :/ the owner of the cattery had several of her cats there wandering around freely who also felt Fae's fury, although they handled it with ease as they were probably used to it.

Iggy was smart and immediately went up onto a high perch in the garden and stayed out of Fae's way. there was a talkative Burmese(?) in the garden suite across the hall from theirs whom Iggy seemed to take a liking to.

Iggy estis tre saĝa kaj tuj supreniris al alta kuŝejo sur la muro de la ĝarden-palisaro por eviti la kolero de Fae. trans la piedvojo en la ĝardena ĉambro apud ili estis babilema Birma(?) kato kun kiu Iggy verŝajne ŝatis.

we stayed with them for about 30 minutes trying to help them both calm down and settle in. Iggy was shivering (for various reasons knowing Iggy), so we gave him lots of love & attention + put one of the blankets that we'd brought with us on him since he loves them.

we tried to comfort Fae too, but that was hard to do with very limited success. at least she had lots to distract her, like the horses wandering in the fields outside, birds, plants etc, but then she found the food dish....... they were given a constant supply of "premium" dry food and Fae turned to stuffing her face in it right away, as to be expected of a gluttonous Devon Rex. i swear "gluttony" should be every Devon's middle name. can you imagine how much weight she put on???

sadly, we had to leave the still nervous Fae & Iggy behind. :( we requested access to the webcam that was installed into their room, but sadly it wasn't working at the time. we worried about them during the entire trip, but was glad that they were in a nice place. tomorrow i'll post photos from when they finally came back home!

i had a post almost all typed up and ready to go when suddenly (because the other human suddenly let Fae out of a room) Fae and Iggy did something that made that post no longer worth posting!

mi jam preskaŭ fintajpis blogaĵo kiam subite (ĉar la alia homo subite malfermis la prodon de la ĉambron en kiu estis Fae) Fae kaj Iggy faris ion, kion fariĝis tiun blogaĵon negrava!

i don't have any good photos because the suddenness of it and i had to keep a close eye on them, but they played with a ball together and ate treats together! it was short, but oh so sweet! i'm so happy that all of the other stuff i was going to post about can wait!

except for the fact that Iggy has a vet appointment in the morning to clear up a minor case of the cat flu that he's caught from Fae. also, Iggy has successfully eaten his first two raw meals. 8)

before bringing Iggy into the apartment, the other human went up and closed Fae in our bedroom. we still had nothing at all for Iggy, so he ran off to the petstore while i brought Iggy upstairs and closed us both in the spare bedroom (Fae's favorite room btw). of course Fae heard his arrival as he was very loud about it. ^^;

like Fae, Iggy loves his food more than anything.

immediately upon being let out of the box Iggy explored every place low & high in the room. places that Fae had never tried to reach or had reached with difficulty Iggy reached with ease! he's obviously an experienced climber and explorer. when we finally had dishes to give him food and water he ate as if he had been lost in a desert for weeks! i guess he hadn't been fed/given water that day...? he's currently on Science Diet because that's what the RSPCA feeds its animals, but i intend to transition him to raw as soon as i get our vet's approval.

anyway, eventually Fae was let out of our bedroom and she immediately went to the spare room door which had never been closed before. at one point the door was barely open a crack when both of them were at it and they both had their first good whiff of each other.

Fae's response: HIIIISSSSS SPIT SPIT BAM BAM BAM!! *attacks the door*
Iggy's reply: HIIISSSS *runs away under the bed*

poor Iggy got a little scare from Fae, but he quickly bounced back not overly fazed. he is use to dealing with other cats and has confidence. Fae, on the other hand, was very miffed and confused. she hasn't attacked the door again like that since then, but she does hiss & spit a bit whenever she's at the door and knows Iggy's on the other side.

anyway, Iggy's first night went fine. i discovered that: Iggy LOVES string; he is SUPER affectionate and is gentler about it than Fae (ie. no biting); he is VERY demanding about his food, just like Fae; his voice is very similar to Fae's. i spent the night in the guest bed with him curled up in Fae's favorite spot next to me under the blanket... i see fights over this in the  future!

yesterday went about the same except without Fae attacking the door. Iggy is pretty laid back (excluding food related matters) and is taking things very well. Fae, on the other hand.... i could write a whole seperate post on how Fae is handling things and i think i will. stay tuned!

in the meantime, if anyone has any advice on introducing cats to each other it would be much appreciated. we intend to take things slow but could use some ideas on how to progress with it. thanks in advance!

ESTAS TRO STRIKTA MALVESTIGI NUN!

it's officially fall here in Australia and the weather has gotten cooler. in response, petstores have started filling their stores with dog clothes (AND NO CAT CLOTHES DAMN DARN THEM)... what is a cat owner who likes pet fashion and who is concerned about their cat's warmth suppose to do?? whatever the answer to that question may be, i've given into temptation and have bought a dog coat (or two!) for Fae to try. the first coat, which i bought some time ago but haven't posted about yet, fit fine. however, tonight i bought another one and it doesn't it at all. it doesn't fit in the chest area, front legs & neck-- poor Fae could barely walk.

Aŭstralie la sezono oficiale fariĝis aŭtuno kaj la vetero fariĝis pli malvarma. laŭ tio, dombest-vendejoj plenigas siajn vendejoj per vestaĵoj por hundoj (KAJ NE POR KATOJ, FEK VE).... kion faru posedanto de kato, al kiu plaĉas dombesta modo kaj kiu maltrankviliĝas pri la varmeco de sia kato?? malgraŭ la respondo al tiu demando, mi falis en tenton kaj aĉetis unu (aŭ du!) hund-jakojn por Fae. la unuan jakon (kiun mi delonge aĉetis sed ankoraŭ ne menciis ĉi tie) Fae povas bone surhavi. tamen, ĉi-nokte mi aĉetis duan kaj Fae tute ne povas ĝin surhavi bone. ĝi estas ege tro strikta ĉe la brusto, antaŭaj kruroj kaj kolo-- kompatinda Fae povis apenaŭ paŝi.

LESSON LEARNED: cats are not built like dogs. do not expect dog clothes to fit a cat.

....BUT. having successfully gotten the coat on Fae i couldn't NOT take photos of her in it! even though it was really mean to do so. i tried to be as quick as possible and thus didn't even take the time to correct the collar.

oh, and i also FINALLY got Fae new treats to replace the ones that we suspect may be triggering her allergy. we suspect (HOPE) that her allergy is related to seafood and it was hard to find treats that had no form of seafood in them. i finally found dried liver treats. :)

ho, kaj mi FINFINE aĉetis novan krommanĝaĵon por Fae por anstataŭigi la antaŭajn, kiuj eble igas ŝiajn alergiojn. ni suspektas (ESPERAS), ke ŝia alergio rilatas al marfrukto kaj estas tre malfacile trovi krommanĝaĵon sen ia ajn marfruktaĵo. finfine mi trovis krommanĝaĵon el sekigita hepataĵo. :)

sorry for the delayed update! Fae went to the vet on wednesday. the visit went alright, although Fae didn't handle it nearly as well as her previous visits due to having to be examined a lot more thoroughly this time. she didn't much care for being "manhandled". :P

pardonon pro la malrapida novaĵo! merkrede Fae vizitis la bestkuraciston. la vizito glate iris malgraŭ tio, ke por Fae ĝi ne tiel glate iris kiel pasintaj vizitoj. ĉi-foje la bestkuracisto devis ekzameni ŝin multoble pli ol antaŭe kaj ne plaĉis al Fae la "manipulado". :P

while the vet visit went well, it really only confirmed suspicions that i already had. the vet confirmed that Fae has an allergy, but to what is still unknown. a flea allergy, which is supposedly the most common allergy in cats, was immediately ruled out narrowing the possibilities down to a food allergy or an environmental allergy... which isn't really narrowing it down much at all.

nu, la vizito glate iris, tamen ĝi simple jesigis supozojn, kiujn mi jam havis. la bestkuracisto konfirmis, ke Fae ja havas alergion, sed kian alergion oni ankoraŭ ne scias. la plej ofta alergio por katoj, alergio pro puloj, estis tuj neigita, do restas ankoraŭ du specoj de alergioj: alergio pro manĝaĵo kaj alergio pro ĉirkaŭaĵoj.... do, efektive restas MULTE da eblecoj.

the vet highly suggested that we put Fae on a trial diet of one "novelty" protein (meat) for 8 weeks, gradually reintroducing other food after that... the major problem that we have with this is that novelty meat like duck, rabbit, quail etc aren't easily found here and thus are fairly expensive. i imagine that it would be VERY costly to feed Fae nothing but this for 8 weeks. furthermore, while the vet said that such a limited diet would be alright temporarily, i still wouldn't be entirely comfortable with it...

la bestkuracisto tre rekomendis, ke ni donu al Fae nur nekutimajn "proteinojn" (viandon) dum 8 semajnoj kaj poste iom post iom ree doni al ŝi la kutimajn.... la grandega problemo pri tio, estas ke nekutima viando, ekzemple anasaĵo, kuniklaĵon, koturnaĵo ktp, estas malfacile troveblaj kaj do estas multkostaj. mi imagas, ke doni al Fae nur tian viandon dum 8 semajnoj estus TRE multkosta. plue, malgraŭ tio, ke la bestkuracisto diras, ke doni tian limigitan dieton al Fae mallongtempe ne estus malbona, mi ankoraŭ sentas kvazaŭ tio estus malbona....

speaking of novelty meat, just before the vet visit we happened to buy some organic (yay!) duck breast for Fae. i really wanted to add a little more variety to Fae's diet and she had never had duck before. she loves it! but that duck cost $24 AUD/$26 USD for only 400g/14oz! crazy. duck will definitely STAY a novelty meat.

anyway, back to the vet. i told the vet my concern about costs and she recommended trying goat meat as she had heard that it is really cheap. she also mentioned that cats seem to have a love/hate relationship with it. i have never seen goat before, so...

ĉiuokaze, pri la bestkuracisto. mi diris al ŝi, ke mi maltrankiliĝas pri la kosto kaj ŝi rekomendis, ke ni donu kapraĵon al Fae ĉar ŝi iam aŭdis, ke ĝi estas tre malmultkosta. ŝi ankaŭ diris, ke ofte katoj aŭ amas aŭ malamas ĝin. plue, mi neniam antaŭe vidis kapraĵon vendeje, do....

all hope is not lost, however. me and the other human now suspect that her allergy may be from her treats rather than her food as the timing of her scratching episodes (of which this isn't the first, this is just the first i've mentioned it here) seems similar to when we were giving her this particular treat. we'll be getting new treats for her this weekend and will be watching her closely to see if she improves.
