a rant (feel free to ignore)

i'm really pissed off right now and i feel the need to rant. feel free to ignore this. there won't be any photos or Esperanto in this post.

mi estas ege kolerega nuntempe kaj sentas kvazaŭ mi nepre devas skribi patoson. senhezite ignoru ĉi tiun blogaĵon. mi ne afiŝos fotojn nek tradukon en Esperanton. se vi deziras scii la enhavon, bv kontakti min: noktema @ gmail . com

for the past two months the apartment that we live in has been up for sale by its owner (we are just renting). this means that for the past two months people have been trampling throughout our apartment during open houses and inspections. for the past two months i've had to keep this place as clean as possible and have had to make sure that i was present during every open house or inspection to ensure that the cats didn't get in the way or RUN away when doors have been left open.

saying that this has been a pain in the ass would be an understatement. not only is it physically exhausting, it's been emotionally exhausting as well. as long as the future owner of this apartment is uncertain, our future home is uncertain beyond the extent of our lease (til April 2012) and finding cat-friendly rentals is very hard here. on top of this there has been some "drama" due to us having a second cat when we were only granted permission for one. long story short, we asked for permission to have a second and waited a week for a reply but never got it before we were due to meet Iggy. we fell in love, brought him home and the next day were told we weren't allowed a second cat. we had been successfully hiding him until these open houses. this extra drama is our own fault, of course. meh.

anyway, today there was a major mix-up in the open house time. we were told that it would be at 2pm but it ended up being at 10am at which time i was at the grocery store. i didn't get back until 10:35am to find the apartment doors all wide open................... thankfully both cats were still inside the apartment, but i nearly had a heart attack until i confirmed that Iggy was there. Iggy has a history of escaping through doors......... i feel that it was INCREDIBLY lucky that Iggy had stayed in the apartment.... lucky for EVERYone involved because i sure as hell would have raised hell on earth with the real estate agency had Iggy or Fae escaped because of them.

i am sick and tired of all this real estate crap. i'd rather find a new place to live right now than continue to deal with this open house/inspection crap for god knows how long until the place sells, but we can't due to our lease. i am fed up with the real estate everything in Brisbane/Australia. it's very different here from how it is in America.......... i miss America sometimes.

.....ok, i better stop there before i go off in another direction. rest assured that the cats received lots of treats once the real estate agent was gone.

Fae and Iggy are doing fine and i swear they're cuter every day. :) i, on the other hand, have had a crazy/lazy past couple of weeks because i became obsessed with a "new" hobby: film photography (and vintage cameras). i've been so obsessed with acquiring and using film cameras that i have neglected to use Panda (my digital camera; all my cameras have names btw) and in turn have been taking very few photos of Fae & Iggy lately. :(

Fae kaj Iggy bonfartas kaj mi opinias, ke ĉiutage ili fariĝas pli amindaj. :) aliaflanke, dum la pasitaj semajnoj mi freneziĝis/pigriĝis ĉar mi fariĝis tute obsedita pri "nova" ŝatokupo: filma fotografio (kaj antikaj fotiloj). mi obsedis tiel multe pri akiri kaj uzi filmajn fotilojn, ke mi tute ne emis uzi  Panda-n (mian ciferan fotilon; ĉiuj el miaj fotiloj nomon havas, perenteze) kaj do mi tre malofte fotis Fae k Iggy lastatempe. :(

over the past couple of weeks i've acquired 4 "new" cameras from the 1950's ~ early 1970's. all but one of them are completely manual (no "auto" anything), so i've been studying studying & practicing how to use them and how to expose photos properly. i have yet to take any photos of Fae & Iggy with them because manual indoor photography is harder than outdoor and fast moving subjects in low/indirect light are harder yet!

dum la pasintaj kelkaj semajnoj mi akiris 4 "novajn" fotilojn faritaj inter la 1950 jardekoj kaj la 1970 jardekoj. ĉiuj el ili krom unu funkcias tute mane (tute ne aŭtomataj). tial mi studadas kaj min ekzercas pri uzi ilin kaj bone ekspozi fotojn. uzante tiujn fotilojn, mi ankoraŭ ne fotis Fae-n kaj Iggy-n ĉar mane foti en ĉambro estas pli malfacila ol foti ekstere kaj foti ion movantan en malmulte da lumo / nerekta lumo estas eĉ pli malfacila!

anyway, that's my excuse. i will try to use Panda more often for the sake of having immediate photos to post to this blog. in the meantime, i will try to perfect using manual cameras so that i can post film photos of Fae & Iggy! i wonder if you all will be able to tell the difference between film and digital. ;)

Americana Kitty

happy belated 4th of July to all the Americans out there! i hope you all enjoyed it. :) it's really hard to celebrate the 4th abroad... :( but with it being the 4th (or rather 5th) of July and all, i figured i'd post about Americana Kitty!

Fae is generally (but not always) nicer to AK. she even let AK feel her fur. :) if you ask me, though, i think AK might have been a little jealous.... maybe i should have given AK a nice, soft coat. :p

now i'm considering trying to make a toy or two for them. :) nothing fancy, maybe felt mice or something.... i also have a coat planned for Fae, but alas! so much to make, so little time!

happy belated Easter to those who celebrate the holiday. today is ANZAC Day in Australia, so combined with Easter we have a 5 day weekend here. you'd think i would have updated this blog more with all those days off! i'm really sorry for the lack of updates lately. 

al ĉiuj, kiuj festas Paskon, feliĉan malfruan Paskon. en Aŭstralio hodiaŭ estas la tago de ANZAC, do kune kun Pasko ni havas 5 tagojn de ferio. tial oni pensus, ke mi pli ofte ĝisdatigus ĉi tiun blogon pro pli da libera tempo! mi tre bedaŭras la lastatempa manko de ĝisdatigoj.

i love to take photos in general, but i'm not a very good writer. i always end up with lots of photos of Fae that i want to post but i lack the words to go with them, so i end up not posting at all. then i get WAY backlogged with photos and a lot of photos end up never being posted... *sigh* i should take inspiration from my blog friends who always post such wonderful posts about their cats. :(

Mister Gray (2005)

Fae doesn't know it, but she has 2 big brothers in America. when i was a college student living in Portland, Oregon in 2005~2007 i had my first 2 cats: Mister Gray and Obsidian. they were brothers from the same mom (my ex's cat) but from different litters. sadly, i had to leave them behind when by a stroke of extreme luck i was offered a job in Japan..... i found Obsidian a home with a co-worker and Mister Gray stayed with my ex, but it was really heart breaking to leave them.... it's thanks to them that i'm the cat lover that i am today. by now Mister Gray would be 5 and Obsidian 4.... i really hope they're ok. i miss them even now....

Obsidian (2006)

Fae ne scias, sed ŝi havas 2 pli maljunajn fratojn en Usono. kiam mi estis studento loĝante en Portlando, Oregono en 2005~2007 mi havis miajn unuajn 2 katojn: Mister Gray kaj Obsidian. ili estis fratoj kun la sama panjo (la kato de la ekskoramiko) sed el malsamaj katid-grupoj. bedaŭrinde mi devis forlasi ilin kiam mi ege bonŝance ricevis oferon pri laboro en Japanio.... mi trovis novan loĝejon por Obsidian kun kunlaboranto kaj Mister Gray restis kun la ekskoramiko, sed la koro tute rompis pro forlasi ilin...  dank' al ili, mi nun estas (freneza) katemulo. nun Mister Gray verŝajne havas 5 jarojn kaj Obsidian 4 jarojn... mi kore esperas, ke ili fartas bone. eĉ nun mi sentas la mankon de ili....

My Girl (2007)

in Japan i was under strict rules and circumstances that prevented me from having a cat, which made things really hard... for one thing i saw stray cats in the streets EVERYwhere in Japan.... some in the worst of conditions, even dying... it was really hard to take none of them in... during my 1st year in Japan i found a little park in my little city that had lots of stray cats.  it was there that i met and fell in love with my first stray who i named My Girl.... My Girl desperately wanted to be taken home, but i left her there in the park... eventually she died and i have always been mad at myself since.

en Japanio mi devis obei tre severajn regulojn kaj havas severan cirkonstancaron kaj do ne povis havi katon... tio estis ege malfacila. ĈIE en la stratoj de Japanioi mi vidis senhejmajn katojn... kelkaj fartis terure malbone, eĉ mortantaj... estis tre malfacile ne kunporti katojn hejme kun mi... dum mia 1a jaro en Japanio, mi trovis parketonn en mia urbeto, kie loĝis multe da senhejmaj katoj. tie mi renkontis kaj unuafoje enamiĝis al senhejma kato, kiu mi nomis My Girl ("Mia Knabin'")... My Girl tutkore volis esti portita hejmen, sed mi forlasis ŝin en la parko.... poste ŝi mortis kaj ekde tiam mi restas malfeliĉa pri mia agado.

Tiger (2009)

in 2009, towards the end of my 2nd year in Japan, for the umpteenth time a kitten somehow ended up at one of the schools that i worked at. her story can be read here , but the gist of it is that she was in bad shape and no one at the school would do anything about it. i ended up taking her home and being faced with the decision of keeping her and getting in big trouble or trying to find her a new home. after a couple of vet visits she felt much better and after a few days i was able to find her a home.... i affectionately called this cat "Tiger" and Tiger was my one cat-related happy ending in Japan...

en 2009, ĉirkaŭ la fino de mia 2a jaro en Japanio, denove troviĝis katido ĉe unu el la lernejoj, kie mi laboris. ŝia rakonto troviĝas ĉi tie (angle), sed mallongigo de ĝi estas, ke ŝi fartis malbone kaj neniu ĉe la lernejo volis fari ion por ŝi. fine mi kunportis ŝin hejmen kaj devis decidi, ĉu ŝi kontraŭregule restu kun mi aŭ ĉu mi provu trovi novan hejmon por ŝi. dufoje mi portis ŝin al bestkuracejo kaj post tio ŝi fartis pli bone. post kelkaj tagoj mi sukcese trovis novan hejmon por ŝi.... mi ŝatis nomi ŝin "Tiger" ("Tigro") kaj Tiger estis por mi la nura rakonto pri katoj en Japanio, kiu havis feliĉan finaĵon....

Haku (2010)

during the later months of my 3rd and last year in Japan i met Haku, a cat that wasn't quite a stray but whose owner couldn't afford to take proper care of him. i often passed Haku on a street on the way to one of my schools... we became friends. :) but sadly i left Japan with no happy end in sight for Haku.... i hope he's doing alright. :/

dum la lastaj monatoj de mia 3a jaro en Japanio, mi renkontis la katon Haku, kiu ne vere estis senjema sed kies mastro ne havis sufiĉe da mono por ĝuste zorgi pri li. mi ofte preterpromenis Haku sur la strato al unu el miaj lernejoj... ni amikiĝis. :) sed bedaŭrinde kiam mi forlasis Japanion ŝajnis al mi, ke la vivo de Haku ne havos feliĉan finaĵon.... mi esperas, ke Haku fartas bone. :/

Fae (2010)

upon arriving in Australia i was really REALLY looking forward to volunteering at an animal shelter and having my own cat again. before leaving America for Japan i swore to myself that i would never leave my cat(s) behind again and that i would never have a cat again unless i was willing to never give him/her up. it was months before i was in a position to have a cat again, but now i have one of the best cats ever and i will never leave her! come what may, even if me and the other human move to America or somewhere else, Fae is coming with us. <3 

kiam mi alvenis al Aŭstralio mi ege EGE antaŭĝojis volontuladon ĉe best-ŝirmejo kaj havi denove mian propran katon. antaŭ ol mi iris for de Usono al Japanio mi promesis al mi mem, ke estontece mi neniam denove forlasos mia(j)n kato(j)n kaj neniam denove havos katon se mi ne sendube kunportos lin/ŝin kun mi ĉien ajn. mi bezonis kelkajn monatojn por fariĝi tute preta por havi denove katon, sed nun mi havas unu el la plej bonaj katoj en la mondo kaj mi neniam forlasos ŝin! eĉ se mi kaj la alia homo iam transloĝiĝos Usonen aŭ aliloken, Fae venos kun ni. <3

for the past week i've barely updated this blog due to being caught up in my knitting projects. :( i finished my first two projects, a cowl and fingerless gloves! this week i'm going to start knitting a matching scarf for the gloves, but i'll try to not put off blogging!on the other hand, i like to think that me and Fae had some nice bonding time over the past week with my cameras in her face less. 8)

collar by/kolrimeno de PeaKazzosEmporium

last week Fae's second new collar came, this one was by PeaKazzosEmporium. i really like it, but sadly we've had to take it off after a couple of days because it was rubbing Fae's neck too much taking off the fragile fur there and leaving a sore. :( maybe i can come up with a lining for it or something....

la pasintan semajnon la dua nova kolrimeno de Fae alvenis, ĉi tiu kolrimeno estis farita de PeaKazzosEmporium. ĝi tre plaĉas al mi, tamen ĝi tro frotis ŝian kolon kaj forigis ŝian dilikan kol-pelton kaj vundis ŝian haŭton. :( eble mi povos krei ion por meti inter ŝia kolo kaj la kolrimeno....

anyway, everything's going alright in Princess Fae's (yes, she is a Princess now) apartment. occasionally she tries to fight the neighbor's cats through the front door, but aside from that things are peachy!

new collar / nova kolrimeno

lately i've been lazy/preoccupied with knitting and so i haven't been keeping up with my blogs or taking photo of Fae..... knitting is kind of time consuming and addictive. :( i'll be happy when my first scarf is finally done!

lastatempe mi estas pigra/okupata pri trikado kaj do mi ne ĝisdatigis miajn blogojn nek fotis Fae-on laŭ kutimo... trikado iome fariĝis manio kaj ĝi bezonas multe da tempo. :( mi estos feliĉa, kiam mi finfine finos mian unuan koltukon!

in the mean time, Fae has lots of goodies coming to her in the mail, the first of which arrived today. i bought this collar on Etsy.com from Creation4Creatures and it fits Fae perfectly! i think it looks really nice on her. :) actually, a second collar is also on the way because after being this one i stumbled upon another really unique collar that i had to get for Fae. photos to come of that collar once it gets here. :) Fae also has some custom-made sweaters on the way! :D photos to come of that much much later because i probably won't try them out on Fae until it gets cooler.

learning to knit / lerni trikadon

i've decided to learn how to knit. the above photo is Fae wearing my first attempt at practicing the garter stitch. i didn't use a pattern or anything, i just did it over and over again until i felt comfortable doing it.

mi decidis lerni trikadon. en la supra foto Fae surhavas mian unuan provon pri ekzerci unu tipon de kudrero (kiel oni diras "gartner stitch"?). mi eĉ ne trikis laŭ instrukcio, mi simple trikadis tiun tipon de kudrero ĝis mi sentis min komforta pri fari ĝin.

instead i tied it around Fae's neck. she wasn't too thrilled about that. :P my long-term goal is to be able to make stuff for myself and for Fae. the other human probably wouldn't wear/use anything i made. :P

anstataŭe mi ligis ĝin ĉirkaŭ la kolo de Fae. ŝi ne ŝategis tion. :P mia ĉefa celo pri lerni trikadon estas fari aĵojn por kaj mi kaj Fae. la alia homo (aliavorte, la koramiko) verŝajne ne vestos sin per miaj kreaĵoj. :P

collar hunting / serĉado por kolrimeno

recently we bought a new collar for Fae because her previous one, a black nylon feed-through collar, had become horrible due to her scratching it. the new one that we got was a Rogz break-away collar and it seems to be slightly too big for Fae's neck. often while cleaning herself her ID tag gets in her way because it and the collar are hanging so low. when it gets in her way she gets really mad at it and bites the tag until she pulls the collar off. she's even been able to get her lower jaw into the inside the collar and pulls off the collar that way. she never had a problem with the previous collar, so this new collar is definitely the problem.

lastatempe ni aĉetis novan kolrimenon por Fae ĉar la antaŭa kolrimenon, kiu estis nilona kaj nigra kaj senlima pri grandeco, fariĝis malbona pro gratado. la nova kolrimeno estas tujmalfermebla kaj ĝi verŝajne estas tro granda por la kolo de Fae. ofte lekante sin Fae mordadas la identigaĵon sur la kolrimeno ĉar ĝi estas tro malalta sur ŝia kolo kaj ĝenas ŝian lekadon. foje ŝi eĉ povas meti sian mandiblon en la enan flankon de la kolrimeno kaj fortiras la kolrimenon.  la antaŭa kolrimeno verŝajne tute ne ĝenis ŝin, do la problemo devas esti la nova.

i've been looking at some designer collar sites because it seems like they're the only ones that offer more sizes than just "kitten" and "adult cat". Kittyboo Collars in particular has an awesome assortment of collars that are available in 3 sizes. :) i'm still undecided on which collar to get, but at the moment the other human seems to really like this one. hmmmm.... that one's ok, i suppose, but for now i'm still looking.

nun mi serĉadas novan kolrimenon ĉe retaj vendejoj, kiuj ĉefe vendas kolrimenoj por katoj. kial tiaj vendejoj? ĉar verŝajne nur tiuj vendejoj havas kolrimenojn kun pli ol la kutimaj 2 opcioj pri grandeco: "katido" kaj "kato". la ttt-ejo Kittyboo Collars estas bonega vendejo ĉar ĝi havas multe da diversaj kolrimenoj kun 3 opcioj pri grandeco. :) mi ankoraŭ ne decidis, kiun kolrimenon mi aĉetos, sed la alia sennoma homo de Fae tre ŝatas ĉi tion. hmmm...... mi supozas, ke tio estas bona, sed mi ankoraŭ serĉadas aliajn. 

p.s. thanks a lot to everyone who commented on my previous entry about the flood. thankfully the flooding didn't get quite as bad as was predicted in Brisbane, but still tens of thousands of homes and businesses are flooded, including the HQ of RSPCA Queensland. thankfully they were able to evacuate all of the animals at the shelter to safe foster homes, but a lot of work lies ahead in the weeks/months to come....

this is the first photo of Fae, then named Dianne, that i saw 1 month and 2 days ago on the RSPCA Adopt A Pet website. i'm really glad that i found out about her that day and went to meet her the next day. life would have been completely different had that not happened....

if only yesterday/today was more of a day of celebration. for over a month Queensland, Australia has been inundated with rain and over the past week massive flooding around the state has been destroying thousands of homes and lives. those who were lucky enough to have advance warning of flooding have had to evacuate leaving their pets behind because they aren't allowed at evacuation centers and animal shelters have had to close due to the flooding. today the high flood waters have begun coming into Brisbane, where we live, and between now and Thursday the Brisbane River is expected to flood an estimated 6,500 homes. thankfully we're safe as we don't live close to the river, but many aren't. :(

bedaŭrinde ne hieraŭ nek hodiaŭ estis/as tute feliĉaj tagoj. dum la pasinta monato+ multege da pluvo pluvadis en Kvinslando, Aŭstralio kaj dum la pasinta semajno grandaj inundoj detruis multe da miloj kaj vivoj. tiuj, kiuj estis bonŝancaj kaj kiuj sciis anticipe pri la venantaj inundoj ne povas kunporti siajn bestojn al evakuejoj kaj do devis forlasi ilin. ankaŭ bestŝirmejoj suferas pro la inundoj. hodiaŭ la akvo de la inundado atingis mian lokon, Brisbano, kaj aproks. 6,500 hejmoj en Brisbano inundos pro la akvo en la Brisbana Rivero. dankinde ni ne loĝas proksime al la rivero, sed multaj homoj tie loĝas.... :(

RSPCA Queensland has started a Flood Relief Fund to collect donations to help the animals that have been affected by the flooding. i hate asking people for money, but even the smallest of donations would be a huge help.... so few people think about animals during natural disasters....
